Chronic back pain is generally defined as a condition that lasts more than three months. There are many different types of chronic conditions that can cause it, such as arthritis or fibromyalgia. The most common cause for acute back pain is injury, from a fall or blow to the spine that causes inflammation in one area, spurring inflammation throughout the rest of your body as well.

Factors that can lead to back problems

There are many factors that can lead to back ache. Here are some of the most common:

  • Poor posture. Rounding the shoulders forward, hunching over, or slouching at work can cause your spine to become misaligned and put pressure on structures in your spine.
  • Injuries. Sudden injuries such as falls, car accidents and sports-related injuries can result in acute back pain that resolves over time with rest and treatment (such as ice packs). Long-term issues may also stem from previous injury or trauma to the area of pain. For example, if you’ve had a previous surgery on one side of your body it may cause chronic pain on that same side if you injure it again due to muscle imbalance caused by scar tissue build up where there once was an incision from surgery or other damage done during recovery time after an operation had occurred previously
